PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY :
Business Unit and Functional Redesign |
|
| | Client: |
|
A multi-billion
dollar global pharmaceutical company.
|
| | Problem: | |
The company was
undergoing a major strategic realignment, including focusing on more
empowered therapeutic areas. The firm was also realigning key functional
groups (e.g. Quality, Regulatory) to support this restructuring, to
increase speed to market, and to maintain quality and service at the
plant level. By committing the company's limited resources to the
most promising business areas, and reducing focus on non-promising
areas, the company hoped to increase it's return to shareholders.
|
| | Approach: | |
In close collaboration
with the client team, Tunnell quickly created a multi-pronged plan
to redesign the therapeutic businesses and product teams and realign
key support functions. The plan included a highly participative design
process, utilization of best practices and benchmarks, and key strategic
design criteria to insure effective implementation of the stated strategy.
The holistic process included macro design, multi-site design, key
functional relationships and coordinating mechanisms, and micro-design
down to roles and responsibilities. The roll-out process was unique
and included in-depth communication by executives and pilot simulations
to let people touch, feel and see the results of the new design.
|
| | Results:
| |
The strategic
redesign resulted in:
A more focused portfolio
Consolidation of key functions such as Quality and Manufacturing
Better alignment, coordination and decision making between line
and staff functions, all with fewer FTEs
Fewer issues to resolve between key areas
Greater speed to market of newly released drugs, saving millions
Greater employee satisfaction as proven in an employee survey
