Problem: |
This major science-oriented division needed an organization-wide workforce plan to meet both Department and internal objectives. The objectives were:
To identify a single set of mission critical occupations (MCOs) which would fairly
represent the needs and priorities of almost 30 operating units
To quantify workforce gaps that most urgently need to be filled in the upcoming few years
To identify the biggest challenges in workforce planning
To recommend solutions to fill gaps and resolve workforce planning challeng

| |
Approach: |
Tunnell developed a comprehensive, three-tiered approach to gather input and solicit support from each operating unit, including:
Interviewing top leadership in each unit to understand priorities and challenges
Holding a series of focus groups to gather more detailed input
Analyzing workforce demographic trends and projected hiring needs for identified priority occupations
| |
| |
Results: |
Tunnell is still in the process of completing this workforce plan, however, the team has already accomplished the following objectives:
Gained momentum and built support across the organization for workforce planning
Identified which occupations have the greatest hiring needs and highest attrition rates over the upcoming four years
Identified the top ten workforce planning challenges within the division
Developed proposed solutions to close workforce gaps and recommendations to address each challenge area
The resulting data and recommendations will provide the foundation for leadership to decide what actions should be taken to improve and institutionalize workforce planning.
