TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY:
Performance Measurement and
Operations Improvement - 2 |
|
| |
Client: |
|
A
rail transportation company with a large midwest terminal performing
a rail-to-highway, highway-to-rail cross-dock operation involving
three distinct product lines. |
| |
|
|
|
| |
Problem: |
|
This
terminal is one of the largest in a network serving numerous locations
within the U.S., and the client had no formal operating procedures,
no performance standards, ineffective measurement or control of staffing
activity, and a need to right-size the operations for consolidation
to a new location. |
| |
|
|
|
| |
Approach: |
|
Having
worked with this client on establishing performance standards, costing
criteria, and operations improvements at similar facilities, Tunnell
provided a study team to perform site inspections, data collection,
operations analysis, and modeling to provide improved efficiency,
workforce alignment and balancing, and recommend process changes. |
| |
|
|
|
| |
Results: |
|
Verification
and application of performance standards and process improvements
identified immediate annual savings of $755,000. Additional savings
of $1,056,000 were proposed and the client initiated a phased implementation
program. |
