MULTI-INDUSTRY CONSORTIUM:
Management Development, Training, and Process Improvement |
|
| |
Client: |
|
A
consortium of manufacturing and service businesses including a commercial
airport, an airline, a banking operation, and a variety of manufacturers. |
| |
|
|
|
| |
Problem: |
|
All
the businesses had a common need to improve operating performance
and develop new skills. But individually each company could not access
the external support required for training and consulting. |
| |
|
|
|
| |
Approach: |
|
Tunnell
worked closely with the consortium to construct and pursue a successful
grant request from the state economic development authority, and to
develop a training methodology that would meet the needs of the diverse
group. A curriculum was developed that ranged from strategic and tactical
planning to management and technical skill development. A team-based,
cross-functional approach assured all operating disciplines, support
functions and organizational levels received proper instruction and
mentoring. In addition, consulting support was provided on-site for
each participating company so that individual improvement goals could
be pursued.
We trained problem-solving teams in several key areas of manufacturing
and service improvement including technical skills, team building,
statistical process control, structured problem-solving, performance
targets and metrics, process streamlining, and identifying and minimizing
variation and risk. Finally, we trained and mentored management in
leading improvement efforts. |

Results: |
|
The
benefits exceeded the expectations of the companies, the grant provider
and the grant administrator. Tunnell regularly provided grant performance
updates and met all grant performance criteria. Each business met
its respective business objectives, positively impacted its market
position, increased customer satisfaction, and built a foundation
for growth and development. Manufacturers increased their production
capabilities through process improvement, process management, in-process
metrics, and technical improvements. All companies developed a data-driven,
problem-solving competency for future success. |
